A recent poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports shows that the majority of Americans prefer a shift to a merit-based immigration system. The minority instead is still favorable to the current immigration system which is based mostly on family ties. The opinion is shared by a wide spectrum of the population and is very prevalent with Republicans, while Democrats lean more toward the status quo.

Women seem to favor family ties more, while men are definitely oriented toward the merit-based system.

The poll also shows that deportation remain very popular with Americans even if the undocumented immigrant has children born in the US. Indeed deportations are gaining strong emphasis in the current administration which counts on them to strengthen the support of its electoral base.

It is also considering a simplification of the hiring process for border patrol officers. In this way, they will be able to hire 5,000 additional officers as requested by a Trump’s executive order published in January. They will probably wave the fitness test and the polygraph test for candidates that have already taken the tests before and served as veterans or law enforcement agents.

This is an area where all Republicans are in agreement amongst themselves and it is an area where they can show constant results to their electoral base.
